The Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead; and buried. The third day He arose from the dead’ He ascended into heaven and now sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Church Universal, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
In 1787, Reverends Richard Allen and Absalom Jones withdrew from the St. George Methodist Church because of "unkind treatment" and restrictions placed upon worshipers of African descent. They founded The Free African Society, which was the beginning of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
In 1816 a church organization or "connection" was organized as the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Richard Allen was the founder and first Bishop.
The word African means that the church was organized by people of African descent and heritage. It does not mean that the church was founded in Africa, or that it is for persons of African descent only. We welcome people of all races and ethnicities.
Our congregation was organized by Rev. Ennis Cook in June 1945 in the basement of Mrs. Johnson at 4028 19th Street. In the fall of 1945 the church moved to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kyles. Pastor Cook made the first annual report at the 1946 Michigan Annual Conference.
Pastor Cook never ceased looking for a larger place to worship and one day The Lord directed him to walk down 17th Street in Ecorse. There he found a house for sale, 4008 17th St., and he purchased it. In the Spring of 1947 Pastor Cook and his officers purchased the lot next door, 4010 17th.
The congregation worked tirelessly to complete the first unit of Community A.M.E.C. and by fall of 1947 they were able to move in. In 1949 the Cornerstone was laid.
Descendants of Pastor Cook still worship at Community A.M.E.C. today, continuing his legacy of service and leadership.
